A Dystopian Night

an Editorial by Ana Estrada

The goal was to create a moodboard, using 2022 Fall READY-TO-WEAR Season looks and complementing them with additional images, photos or textures to create a story with a concept around them

I selected looks with very intense colors and textures. Fabrics go from sequins and fur to wool and silk. The black and blue colors play an important role on the story (keep reading to know more about it)

The designers I have selected are LaQuan, Saint Lauren and Ambush, with a total of 7 looks

Based on Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley

A Dystopian Night is a prose to the future.

It is the 5000s and due to the influence of eugenics, humans are born with perfect beauty and health, making them inmortal. The World has fell into a perpetual night after the Sun’s death and no science advancements have been able to recreate its light to this day. The sky has turned so dark that the State was forced to installed Luxor panels on top of every building so people could regain their hope to live

Due to the Chemical Wars (4675 - 4856), the atmosphere was destroyed centuries ago, killing two thirds of the World’s population. Since then, a glass ceiling covers the entire surface of the Earth. On Reprimand Camps, this ceiling reflects the 42.3 billion candela panels with such an intense force, that some exiles have gouge out their eyes in an effort to stop the pain; others have unsuccessfully tried to escape and died drowned in the poisonous crimson tide

Humans are only allowed to wear blue or black colors. These codes represent whether or not they are available for sexual intercourse. Objects are represented by red and green colors; green being the color of Merom, the State’s drug

Merom is consumed daily by society, it is contained in almost every liquid-form product there is in the market. Merom is a rewind substance; it allows humans to travel in time, future and past - facilitating the boring burden of being immortal. When mixed with aluminium, Morem will lose its time traveling properties but instead summerge humans in such a high state that some of them will be able to develop supernatural powers

The State has control over the entire population, every corner is monitored constantly and data is processed by robots with supreme artificial intelligence. Every human has an identification code carved in their wrists at birth, which flashes in red when a law has been broken, notifying the Ministry of Life. The Ministry will issue the correspondent punishment or sentence the criminal to exile.

When humans’ behavior is above the desired minimum law, numbers will activate in a green color. The Ministry of Life will then reduce the human’s life expectancy from immortality to an “X” years amount, depending on the reward score of the actions.

Some of these laws include regular designated Assassination Days, in which humans need to perform “cleaning patrols” to help control population levels. Due to scarce resources, killing is necessary; the higher number of victims, the bigger the reward score.

At then end, killing will save you from immortality - as if you had to kill in order to die.

THE STATE IS WATCHING

This fictional editorial is inspired in A Dystopian Night; our location is in Kolmanskop, an abandoned village in the Namib desert, which was established by the Germans in 1910 in order to provide housing to the diamond miners who lived there. The village was abandoned in 1956 and has been buried by the desert

The idea is to create a dystopian world, where the only known survivors have been women. These women are strong fighters; they carry arms and know how to use them. They are not afraid of the outside world

I would love to have Taylor Russell and Willow Allen as the models for the shooting. I love their beauty, elegant and exotic at the same time

For MUA I would love to work with Fara Homidi and recreate the above showed looks: very natural skin with strong lips - resembling how the cold of the night in the desert break the lips. For hair, I would love to work with Joey George, who works great with wet looks and forms in the front

In terms of photographer, I would like to work with Ellen Von Unwerth. I love the way she portrays women; they look strong and independent, with a touch of masculinity but without losing the beauty and sexiness of femininity. I would like to have very aggressive and “masculine” poses
